Ovaltine Roof Observation Post

2nd World War

By Brian Coles

When I was at school in Church Lane during the war we used to see the men on the Ovaltine roof observation post from the playground.

They would signal to us when an air raid was imminent – this would be received by the persons appointed at the time to watch from the school who would acknowledge the sign from the Ovaltine factory by waving a flag. As pubils we were then told to hide under our desks in the classrooms.
