My uncle Bert's pub

Old High Street, Hemel Hempstead

By Joy Small

My Uncle Bert was an ex policeman at Hemel Hempstead and he had a pub in the High Street which I visited before the war. I was a little girl, it was the only time I ever went in a pub.  It had an old pub atmosphere.

He had a big moustache, two sons called John and Bert, and a wife called Lizzie.  When he visited us at home he always gave me half a crown, which was a fortune in those days.  We lived in Radlett.

One of his sons had the Fountain pub in Apsley later.
