My Grandfather Willliam Gower and his brother Arther built most of old Boxmoor St. John’s Road, Cowper Road, Puller Road, Horsecroft Road, Kingsland Road and Sebright Road where they both lived.    I wish they had received more recognition.

  • My great grandparents, surname Crofts built and lived in a bungalow at (I think) number 10 Cowper Road. When they died their youngest daughter Violet May (my great aunt) and her husband Henry Porter lived there until they died. They always told me the original site had a bottle factory on it before the bungalow was built in (I think) 1920s. I have 2 earthenware bottle that they dug out of the garden with ‘William Thomas & Son, Boxmoor, Ye olde style brewed ginger ale on one, and E R Thomas, Boxmoor on the other. Does anyone know anything about this ?

  • I am Jennifer Ellen Latchford. Mr Gower lived next door. My DNA test has revealed my next door neighbour was my great grandmother. I would like to get in touch with my family.

  • I understand your concerns about recognition for the Gowers and have tried to rectify it a little in our latest book, Bourne End & Boxmoor Old and New, available price £12 from Parry’s in St John’s Road, or David Doyle’s the Estate Agents. We still live in Sebright Road, and would like to know more of your family history. Joan & Roger Hands, 01442 393381
